Thirty Newburgh Free Academy students, along with several teachers and staff are heading to Far Rockaway, Queens, Friday to help those still affected by Hurricane Sandy.
The group will travel to the Community Church of the Nazarene, which has been leading the effort to serve hot meals to the 15,000 people estimated to still be without electricity, hot water or heat, according to a statement Thursday by the Newburgh Enlarged City School District.
The church has several distribution lines for serving food as well as providing water, blankets and cleaning supplies. The church served 40,000 hot meals from Nov. 1 to Dec. 2. The distribution lines are open from noon to 5 p.m. every day.
