New mall shops in time for fall fashion
Finding a new fall look shouldn't be a problem for Long Island shoppers this year, based on the sheer number of "coming soon" and "grand opening" signs plastered in storefronts within local malls.
Roosevelt Field leads the way, opening nine new stores between July and September with a handful of other projects close behind.
"Long Islanders are such a fashionable crowd, and at this mall we're in great company," says Arlena Pordoy, public relations manager for Ann Taylor, which opened a concept store at Roosevelt Field in July followed by a LOFT store a week later.
Six stores have opened recently at the Tanger Outlets Riverhead, with Andrew Marc scheduled soon to become number seven.
Walt Whitman Mall in Huntington has added four stores in recent months and Americana Manhasset, Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove, Westfield South Shore Mall in Bay Shore and Tanger Outlets Deer Park each opening at least three new retailers, too. Among the highlights:
This Australian store sells trendy but affordable clothing for men and women -- think oversized shirts, colorful scarves and maxi-dresses, along with basics such as cardigans, tanks, lightweight jeans and comfy tees. The Cotton On Foundation is dedicated to charity work, donating proceeds from reusable shopping bags ($2) to causes in need.
WHERE Roosevelt Field (516-294-2603) and Smith Haven Mall (631-406-4187)
This funky store takes a topsy-turvy approach to children's clothing and accessories. Patterned reversible socks are sold in packages of three (really, three unmatched socks) for $9-$19 and sequined cardigans go for $39. You'll also find brightly colored bedding and backpacks.
Not Your Daughter's Jeans
Curvy women are the focus at Not Your Daughter's Jeans, which opened a factory outlet in Deer Park. Claiming to make customers look "a full size smaller instantly," NYDJ sells current denim styles with built-in shaping technology for tummy control and rear end lift. Jean leggings start at $98, wide-leg cuts are priced from $104.
High-end shoppers swear by Theory for wardrobe staples -- think perfect-fitting women's dress pants (from $235), crisp blazers (from $375), silk blouses and cashmere sweaters. Headquartered in Manhattan's trendy Meatpacking District, Theory is sold by major department stores and local boutiques (the label also has its own stores in Manhasset and the Hamptons) -- but the outlet location is the only one on Long Island.
WHERE Roosevelt Field mall
Originally a tire company in the aviation industry, Palladium turned to footwear after World War II. They will open their first U.S. store in Roosevelt Field in October, where they will sell sturdy rubber-soled boots for men, women and children. All styles, from plaid ($75) to knee-high leather ($140), have a rugged edge.
WHERE Americana Manhasset
At its first freestanding store, Beauty Bar will have two treatment rooms with makeup artists and aestheticians on hand when it opens next month. Popular beauty brands such as Dermalogica, Bliss and Philosophy will be sold, as well as hard-to-find brands from around the world.
