Up on the Board: Ethics in Albany, boating laws, and old voting machines
The editorial board held a short meeting today because we had a visit from Ellen Biben, who is stepping down as the executive director of the Joint Commission on Public Ethics, and Daniel Horowitz, chairman of JCOPE. The discussion was eye-opening, and we plan to editorialize about this important agency in the near future.
For tomorrow, we’re looking at legislative proposals to regulate boating, after a series of accidents and drunken boating.
And we’re appalled at the incompetence of the New York City Board of Elections, which says it wants to revive the old lever voting machines after failing to make electronic scanners work. The rest of the country has managed to switch to more modern vote-counting – what’s up with New York City? Incompetence, we fear.

Up on the Board is the editorial board's blog about what we just discussed at our weekday morning meeting. These meetings are where we talk about the news of the day and hash out our positions for the opinion sections of Newsday, Newsday Westchester and amNew York.
