Filler: Election night coverage full of numbers, short on information

CNN's election night coverage.

No matter who wins the presidential election, I can tell you who the losers are in coverage of the big night: intelligence and common sense.

I’ve been watching CNN early on, and in its hunger to provide viewers with that ultra-niche information they can’t get on Fox News or MSNBC (but might well be able to garner from a Magic 8-Ball) they’ve been asking exiting voters questions they appear...

Bessent: Sandy disaster shows need for a strong federal response

Craig Fugate, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management

Reality has a rude way of intruding on ideology.

Hurricane Sandy has left a multistate swath of destruction that in the New York City region alone will no doubt cost billions of dollars to clean up and repair. So while small government of limited means and responsibilities may sound good in ordinary times, extraordinary moments like this provide good reason to rethink whether that’s really...

Bessent: Hurricane Sandy offers pause from a very ugly campaign

Hurricane Sandy has forced a time-out in the increasingly nasty presidential campaign.

Sandy-anticipation has essentially shut down the New York City region and much of the East Coast. But to borrow a cliché, “It’s an ill wind that blows no good.” The consequences of the storm are yet to be assessed, but for now, the public could use a break from this mean-spirited race as it enters the homestretch.

Keeler: Will conservatives welcome Mitt Romney, dove?

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney answers a question

For all the expectation months ago that foreign policy was the landmine waiting to explode under Mitt Romney’s feet, it didn’t quite happen. It was a foreign policy debate without a major Gerald Ford moment. Mitt Romney didn’t step on that landmine by saying something like what President Ford did, saying that Eastern Europe was not under Russian domination.

But Monday's debate in Boca Raton,...

Bessent: Mitt Romney and Barack Obama agree more than they disagree on Syria, Libya

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney answers a question

It’s actually comforting that President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney don’t disagree all that much at the start of their third debate on what the nation should be doing in the Middle East. They’re dancing on the head of a pin to find contrasts.

Things are messy and chaotic in Syria and Libya and elsewhere in the region. But change is like that, particularly when people are throwing off oppressive...

Filler: Final debate topics leave race up for the taking

Workers prepare the set for Monday's presidential debate

So this is it -- the rubber match in a three-debate presidential battle that most onlookers agree is tied 1-1, after Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney crushed Barack Obama in Denver under the snoozing eye of moderator Jim Lehrer and Obama won the Long Island rematch on points thanks to an odd assist from moderator Candy Crowley.

Tonight's debate in Boca Raton, Fla., is to focus entirely...

Cartoon: Where did Mitt Romney leave his 'binders full of women'?

While answering a question on gender pay equity at the Hofstra debate, Mitt Romney said he went to "a number of women's groups and said, 'Can you help us find folks?' And they brought us whole binders full of women."

The comment became an instant trend on social media networks, spawning parodies and its own accounts on Twitter and Facebook.
