Marine Fishes of Long Island

The following list of 338 species of fish, representing 114 families, was compiled by Philip T. Briggs and Dr. John Waldman.

The boundaries include a 25-fathom depth limit on the south shore, the New York-Rhode Island boundary seaward into Block Island Sound eastward, the Long Island Sound and Fishers Island Sound to the north and the battery in Manhattan on the west.

Briggs, of Sayville, is a biologist who worked for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for 36 years as a fish and crustacean specialist.

Waldman is a senior scientist for the Hudson River Foundation and author of the book, ‘’The Dance of the Flying Gurnards: America’s Coastal Curiosities and Beachside Wonders,’’ published in 2002 by Lyons Press.
