YONKERS - After almost 50 years in a small, cramped shelter, animals waiting for a new home in Westchester now have a new place to stay.
An 11,000-square foot building on Ridge Hill Boulevard is now the new home for the Yonkers Animal Shelter.
Some of new features include rooms for people to get acquainted with a pet before they adopt and a big fenced-in area for the animals to run around.
The $4.9 million project has been in the works for about 10 years. Financial help for the shelter came from pretty much everywhere, including a young pet lover who raised $400 at her lemonade stand. "I did it because I love animals. I thought it was very nice to do, so I just did it," says Nicole Vene.
