1300 Lido Boulevard Point Lookout, NY 516-431-3900
Samantha Rizzi of Stuart Manor has been taking her kids to Point Lookout for years. Her number one reason? The lifeguards. “Compared to Jones Beach, Lido Beach, Long Beach, I feel my kids are safest here,” she said. “The lifeguards are so attentive and there are always so many of them on duty.” On this rough day, rescues were being made left and right as she spoke.
“We’ve been open since the late 1920’s,” beach supervisor Reggie Jones said, “and we have never lost anyone to drowning during bathing hours.”
Point Lookout offers a short walk to the water and smaller crowds than neighboring Jones. While the section of the beach immediately past the tollbooth is packed with kids and has body boarding sections, a concession stand and an ice cream truck, walk or park your car further to the left and find the much less inhabited “quiet zone”, where no radios are allowed and the older crowd finds peace and relaxation. While this area is great for sunbathers who don’t want to be disturbed, seaweed build-ups tend to be the worst here, so swimmers should continue to walk even further left where the water is almost always clearer.
