THE BRONX - Police say a man shot and killed by police on Davidson Avenue near West Tremont Avenue today was a suspect in an armed robbery.
Police say 44-year-old James Torres, of Locust Point, followed a 24-year-old man into a Chase Bank ATM vestibule while he was waiting for a bus at around 4 a.m.
Torres then allegedly held the victim up at gunpoint, taking his money and cellphone. The robbery victim pointed him out to officers who were patrolling the area, and they proceeded to chase him to a building two blocks away.
Police discovered that the suspect was armed with a loaded gun.
Officials say there was a struggle between police and Torres before one officer shot him twice in the chest. Torres was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he later died.
Authorities say Torres had previously served two jail sentences, one most recently for attempted robbery and another for assault.
The Chase Bank on Burnside Avenue where the initial robbery took place has been reopened following an investigation.
The victim of the robbery was not hurt during the incident.
