Seaside living in the hamlet of Port Washington appeals to all sorts of people, says Dorothy Waxman, who has been a real estate agent and resident there for 35 years. Young families continue to be drawn by the excellent school district, while commuters revel in the community's Long Island Rail Road line that whisks workers into the city in a mere 36 minutes in peak hours.
These days, Waxman says, residents appreciate the state-of-the-art Port Washington Public Library, which was recently named one of the 50 best in the country. Its newly launched Web site lets residents participate in online book clubs and chat live with a librarian on duty.
There are free tennis courts, and the Nassau County-run Harbor Links Golf Course offers 18- and 9-hole courses, driving ranges and miniature golf. A new senior citizen community, Mill Pond Acres, has opened.
Real estate agents say the waterfront - the sailboats, the harbor, the cozy beach areas - keeps Port Washington residents engaged.
