Pumpkin picking on Long Island
Fresh air, crisp temperatures and the smell of hot chocolate. It must be time to pick pumpkins. This years crop looks to be a good one and there are a couple of specialty pumpkins to marvel over: Goosebumps and Knuckleheads. Both are bumpy, warty wonders, but expect to pay a little extra for these specialty pumpkins.

ADMISSION $2-$5 per attraction or $19 combo ticket for six activities on weekends (bounce house, hayride, animal train ride, tractor trike ride, mildly scary haunted indoor maze, fire truck slide).
This 1-acre patch is replenished from the farm’s other patches. Most activities geared toward 12 and younger. Concession stand items include roasted corn, homemade candy and caramel apples and hot apple cider (about $2.50 each). The stand also has pies, including sweet potato, and an extensive selection of fall decorations in the greenhouse.

A 3-acre patch with pumpkins cut off the vine, some trucked from farm’s other locations. You’ll find both large pumpkins and smaller ones geared for younger pickers and smaller hands. Also gourds, straw bales, corn stalks
Farm stand offers roasted corn ($2.50), pies and other baked goods, vegetables and fall ornamental plants and Long Island-grown apples, field-grown mums, Montauk daisies, ornamental kale and cabbage.

There’s a 15-minute hayride ($5) around the perimeter of the farm and to the 5-acre pumpkin patch. The small concession stand has hot cider ($2) and roasted corn ($3 or two for $5) among its offerings.

PUMPKINS 60 cents a pound, grown on the farm in about 1/2-acre plot
ADMISSION $8 ($6 ages 14 and younger), pumpkin picking, includes 15-minute hayride and one cup of feed for the animals.
Other activities include a giant tire swing, a nighttime haunted hayride ($6) on Halloween night with live ghoulish characters. Weekend activities include live music on Sundays. Special guests — including beekeepers, falconer, naturalist — on Saturdays. Live music every Sunday. “The hayride is our alternative to trick-or-treating,” says co-owner Jean Benner. Haunted Harvest Festival noon-4 p.m. Columbus Day includes apple cider tasting, vegetables for sale and demonstrations by American Indian artisans. Activities are geared toward ages 12 and younger. Farm stand has home-baked goods, including apple cider doughnuts, pies and apple cider.
