The Putnam County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Law Enforcement Division is investigating the deaths of cats found in Putnam Lake that were shot or decapitated.

On Thursday about 2 p.m., Putnam Lake resident Robert Kitts found his 7-month-old female calico dead near his home after hearing gunshots. Investigators found that the cat was shot with a pellet gun. The cat died a few days later because of progressive paralysis.

The SPCA also is looking into a case from Aug. 20, 2012, in which a decapitated cat was found at Garfield Drive and Quogue Road.

Two other decapitated cat bodies were found in July in the Towns of Fairfield and Oxford, Conn., about 30 miles away. Investigators do not know whether the acts are connected.

The Putnam County SPCA is offering a $3,000 award for information leading to the arrest of any person responsible for the crimes. The SPCA's phone number is 845-520-6915.
