A four-month moratorium to keep personal information for pistol permit owners in New York private ends Thursday, but Putnam County officials say they will still turn down requests for the names of registered gun owners.
Releasing the information could put a lot of gun owners in the Hudson Valley at risk, said Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell. That's why she Putnam will keep its list private, she said.
In December, the Putnam County clerk sparked a big debate when he refused to hand over the county's list of gun owners to The Journal News. Westchester and Rockland counties did comply with the Freedom of Information Act, and the newspaper used that information to create a controversial map which included the permit holders' names and addresses.
In Westchester, nearly 10,000 gun owners have chosen to keep their information private. In Rockland, about 4,000 have opted to keep their information private.
