AIRMONT - A former rock'n'roll DJ from Airmont was in a Caribbean courtroom Friday.

David Herman is accused of trying to arrange a sexual tryst with a 7-year-old girl. The 77-year-old used to be a morning fixture on New York's airwaves, spinning for 27 years on WNEW FM radio.

According to the criminal complaint, detectives in Bergen County, New Jersey, began chatting with him online last year, posing as a 36-year-old woman with a then-6-year-old daughter, named Lexi. Investigators say Herman tried to arrange several rendezvous in New York City and New Jersey to have sex with the young girl, even suggesting he would use alcohol to relax her or use force, if necessary.

When those attempts failed, detectives say Herman purchased airline tickets for the mother and daughter to meet him in St. Croix in late September. Instead, he was met by Homeland Security agents, who arrested him on the spot at the airport.

Herman is facing 10 years to life in prison if convicted, and $250,000 in fines. He did not enter a plea in court on Friday, and says he won't fight extradition to New Jersey.

His attorney declined to comment.

Neighbors say they are shocked and disgusted at the allegations against Herman.
