A couple from Nassau County were killed early Sunday morning on Interstate 87 in Orange County after the motorcycle they were riding was struck from behind by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene, according to State Police.

Rafaelito DeJesus, 23, of Valley Stream, and Melissa Rupa, 25, of Mineola, were traveling northbound on the Thruway near Exit 16 in the Town of Woodbury when they were struck from behind by another vehicle at about 1:10 a.m. and ejected from the motorcycle onto the highway, police said.

Both were pronounced dead on the scene.

State Police said the man who struck them fled but was later apprehended by Woodbury police after someone from the Orange County Medical Examiner's office, who had just come back from the crash scene, noticed a vehicle driving erratically and called police.

The driver of the vehicle, who hasn't been identified, is from Monroe and has been arrested. He is likely to face charges of driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a fatal accident and other more serious changes, police said Sunday. The Monroe man was still being interviewed Sunday afternoon, police said.

The license plate and bumper from his vehicle was left at the crash scene, according to police.

Police said the couple were on their way to visit family in the Hudson Valley.

The investigation is ongoing.
