THE BRONX - Local officials are calling for religious-based food options in city schools for New York’s thousands of Muslim students.

Councilman Raphael Espinal and officials with the Bangladeshi American Advocacy Group are pushing for city council members to pass Resolution 54, which would introduce halal food in the public school system.

Supporters of the bill say it's needed as the Muslim community grows.

So far, 16 council members have signed on to Resolution 54. Only 10 more are needed for it to pass.

Supporters plan on meeting with these members to explain the importance and continue their fight.
