The former leader of a Roman Catholic religious order in New Rochelle, who already faces child sexual abuse charges, has been indicted by a Massachusetts grand jury for allegedly raping a second child at a seminary in the early 1980s.
The Rev. Richard McCormick, 71, was indicted Thursday on charges that he raped a boy between the ages of 7 and 9 on multiple occasions between June 1981 and September 1983, while he was serving at a Catholic retreat center in Ipswich, Mass., according to Carrie Kimball-Monahan, a spokeswoman for the Essex County district attorney.
McCormick, former head of the Salesian Brothers of Don Bosco facility in New Rochelle, was indicted last year on charges he abused a boy between the ages of 9 and 10 at the now-closed Sacred Heart Retreat House, run by the Salesian Brothers.
McCormick had been freed on $1,000 cash bail in August after his arrest on the previous charges, and has since been allowed to move to the Vianney Renewal Center in Missouri, a facility for pedophile priests, Kimball-Monahan said.
If convicted on felony child rape charges, McCormick faces up to life in prison.
Kimball-Monahan said the second victim came forward after seeing news coverage of the allegations. Prosecutors don't know if there are other victims who haven't come forward. "It's certainly a possibility," Kimball-Monahan said.
McCormick is expected to be arraigned on April 5. His attorney, Stephen Neyman of Boston, didn't immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
In 2009, the Salesian Brothers order settled with three men who alleged McCormick sexually abused them while they were attending a seminary in Goshen in the late 1970s. Seven years earlier, McCormick was forced to resign from a teaching job in St. Petersburg, Fla., after allegations by a female student that he touched her inappropriately.
The Salesian order was founded in the 19th century by St. John Bosco to care for homeless and orphaned child laborers he encountered in Turin, Italy. It takes its name from its patron saint, St. Francis de Sales.
A call to the Salesians' eastern U.S. headquarters in New Rochelle on Friday was not returned.
