Roosevelt is a small, mainly residential community that borders Freeport, Merrick, Baldwin and Uniondale.
The area is home to United Cerebral Palsy of Nassau County, which provides programs and services to more than 1,800 children and adults who have developmental disabilities. The hamlet also offers a variety of services, eateries and houses of worship. Roosevelt Park has a play area and small pond.
While capes and Colonials dominate housing styles, various ranches, splits and contemporaries also can be found. According to Trevaris Mason, associate broker at Country Club Plus Realty Inc. in Freeport, several affordable single-family houses were built in various parts of the community in 2000.
In 2002, the Roosevelt school district became the only one in the state to fall under direct state control, in an effort to address long-standing academic and financial problems.
