A home improvement contractor is facing a felony grand larceny charge after he took $6,750 from a New City homeowner to build a carport and walked away, according to Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Zugibe.

Scott Motz, 42, of Suffern, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of third degree grand larceny, a news release said.

Working under the company name of S.T.M. Construction, and with a license already suspended from a previous complaint, Motz contracted with the victim in December 2011 to build the carport, the release said. The customer gave Motz a down payment of $2,500. Shortly after beginning the job, Motz allegedly asked for another payment in order to buy materials, and was paid $4,250 to continue the job.

Motz produced a phony invoice from an Orange County lumber company in an attempt to deceive the homeowner, Zugibe said, then quit the job without providing a refund or an accounting of where the money went.

Motz was arraigned in Clarkstown Town Court on Wednesday and released. He faces a separate complaint in Mount Pleasant, where he was being arraigned Thursday morning on a charge of felony fourth degree grand larceny, according to the Mount Pleasant Town Court. His next court date in the Clarkstown case is Aug. 29.

The arrest resulted from an investigation conducted by the district attorney's office's Special Investigations Unit. If convicted on the Clarkstown charge, Motz faces up to seven years in prison.

Clarkstown Town Court had no information on an attorney for Motz in the Rockland case, and Zugibe's office did not immediately return a call for comment. Motz is being represented in the Mount Pleasant case by Legal Aid, the court there said. Motz could not be reached Thursday morning.
