For a different sort of Sunday afternoon, Mr. Beery’s in Bethpage is hosting a band-driven fundraiser set to run until late in the evening.

Designed to raise money for both Stony Brook University’s radio station (90.1 WUSB-FM) and the Hurricane Sandy recovery effort, this show launches at 3 p.m. and features a number of indie bands -- which, as most seasoned bar-goers will tell you, is hardly the norm for a local bar like ‘Beery’s.

On the Island, most neighborhood taverns that offer live music tend to stick to a formula of either hiring ensembles that play familiar rock and pop or acoustic artists that perform scaled-back, relaxed sets. However, the show planned for Sunday (Nov. 18) is unlikely to offer any instantly recognizable songs, as the acts scheduled all play music that could be most easily described as “alternate” -- but generally referred to as “indie” (as in “independent of a major music label’s promotion or influence”) – and can cover many genres of music.

Groups on the bill include Northport’s Cola, Smithtown band Escape Time, Patchogue-based Eastern Phoebes and Rice Cultivation Society from East Meadow – making this show especially unusual as not only are these bands Long Island-based, but indie music finds a greater demand at NYC venues; finding a line-up of Long Island indie bands playing the same show on Long Island is somewhat rare.

A $10 donation will be requested at the door, with 10 percent of the proceeds going to the community-organized relief group Occupy Sandy (occupysandy.org). In addition, there will be art and raffles – and for local musicians, this is an opportunity to bring by CDs of their music to be added to the WUSB-FM music library -- and possibly played as part of the upcoming WUSB Local Music Marathon set for December 2 (9 a.m.-12 a.m.).
