Sen. Spano joins a slew of corrupt HV officials in prison

YONKERS - U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara has vowed to root out corrupt elected officials, and former Sen. Nick Spano is just his latest conviction.Spano, who has been convicted of tax evasion, is following some other high-profile Hudson Valley politicians to prison, all of whom were prosecuted by Bharara.Fellow Republican and former Putnam County Sen. Vincent Leibell is serving 21 months for extorting money from crooked lawyers who were working for a local non-profit group that he actually controlled.Former Yonkers City Councilwoman Sandy Annabi is awaiting sentencing for bribery and extortion. She was convicted of accepting cash and gifts in exchange for dropping her opposition to two developments, one of which was the $800 million Ridge Hill project. Two of Spano's political proteges, attorney Anthony Mangone and Yonkers Republican Party Chairman Zehy Jereis, were also convicted in that scheme.
