Deputy Editor, newsday.com
Newsday.com is looking for a Deputy Editor to help set the day-to-day editorial direction and oversee the planning of news, database, mobile and social media projects at one of the nation's leading newspaper websites, located in the New York metropolitan area.This is a position that requires significant newsroom management experience, preferably in a major news market.

-Skilled at juggling a variety of daily tasks, with project management and strategic planning experience;
-Knowledgeable about the role social media and mobile play in expanding a website's reach;
-Comfortable taking a leading role in news meetings and working with senior print editors;
-Experienced at training and mentoring employees;
-Familiar with Long Island and/or interested in focusing on Long Island news.
Experience and qualifications:
-Bachelor's degree and at least five years' newsroom Web publishing experience;
-HTML and photo editing skills and experience working with video; knowledge of CSS, mySQL and Flash a plus;
-Flexibility to work various shifts, including into the evening;
- Reliable transportation to and from Newsday's suburban Melville office.

Internet news manager -- News, newsday.com
newsday.com is looking for an internet news manager to help oversee the news programming of its site and lead its breaking news coverage in the competitive New York metro-area market.This is a position that requires significant Web and newsroom experience, strong news judgment and organizational skills.
Responsibilities include:
- Programming the homepage and all subsections of newsday.com, including the sports section as necessary;
- Coming up with ideas for unique local content, and helping build out sections of the newsday.com site;
- Working closely with others in the newsroom on multimedia projects;
- Updating our mobile platforms;
- Using metrics to help inform programming decisions;
- Representing the website at news meetings;
- Assigning and overseeing the work of assistant internet news managers and interns.

Video editor
The Video Editor position for Newsday Interactive will be responsible for video production including shooting, editing, final production, posting and monitoring of all video and news feeds streaming on newsday.com and its affiliate websites.Position will assume either the day side video production schedule (Monday-Friday 7:30 am to 3:30 pm) or night time video production schedule (Monday-Friday 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm) with some flexibility to work additional hours and alternate shifts based on business needs and breaking news stories.
Will liaison with Newsday editorial staff, News 12 and Cablevision teams to ensure breaking news and video coverage of news-related events engage and drive our audience to the websites.
Specific duties and responsibilities
-Coordinate coverage with Multimedia editor and Day Assigning editor.
-Will assign video to be shot to staff; coordinating video to be edited amongst staff; monitor and assign or edit incoming reporter video via email.
-Monitor and program Top Video and On LI channels on site.
-Send out night production note to copy desk, web desk and Cablevision, and coordinate overnight/early morning coverage.
-Edit, post, critique all incoming video; continuously program most important site channels
-Monitor edited status of all expected staff video.
-Analyze site metrics on a daily basis to guide programming and streaming of relevant content on the web.
-Keep up with and incorporate internet content trends on various media and niche websites.
-Coordinating coverage with News 12 at 8:30 AM.
-Attending all daily budget meetings during the week and on Sundays.
Knowledge/Skills
-Mastery of Final Cut Pro/Server.
-Experience with Motion, Color, Soundtrack Pro, DVD Studio Pro.
-Proficient with both Mac and PC operating systems
-Demonstrate excellent news judgement and decision-making ability to deliver unique content and videos on the web.
-Comfortable both behind the camera and in the editing suite.
-Strong communication and organizational skills to meet timely department goals and breaking news coverage.
-Must be a team player and possess the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects while meeting both short-term and long-lead deadlines.
-Must be creative thinker that is able to identify ways to optimize traffic by adjusting content regularly.
-Keep up with and incorporate internet content trends into daily work assignments
-Should have strong interest in target audience.
Education/Experience
-A minimum of 3+ years editing experience in a newsroom environment highly preferred.
-Bachelors degree in Journalism, Mass Communications, Production and/or related field strongly desired.

These are hands-on internships with opportunity for advancement -- seven interns have been hired as full-time employees in the past three years.The ideal candidates are hard-working, meticulous, self-motivated and team players with previous newspaper and online experience. Interns work out of Newsday's Melville office, or in the field.
News, sports and entertainment internships:
You’ll be posting stories and creating photo galleries, polls and other multimedia extras; writing blog posts; maintaining specific sections of the site and working on social media.
You’ll also assist with breaking news and help on longer-term multimedia projects. Previous projects have included multi-part articles, a special report on Alzheimer's (newsday.com/alzheimers), a comprehensive voters' guide (newsday.com/votersguide), our 9/11 section (newsday.com/911), a history of the Knicks database (newsday.com/knickshistory) and the final “Harry Potter” movie premiere (newsday.com/harrypotter.)

Multimedia internships:
The ideal candidate would be familiar with the principles of video editing and shooting video for a news website. Interns will have the opportunity to produce non-linear pieces for newsday.com, as well as shoot spot news and feature pieces for the Web.

Social media interns help to drive conversation and engage our audiences on newsday.com and exploreLI.com through our social media accounts.
Candidates should bring creative and fun ideas on ways to spread our news, invite user participation and locate and contact sources. Interns will work closely with social media coordinators, as well as reporters, editors and Web producers to assist on social journalism projects around the newsroom.
Our ideal candidate has excellent people skills, demonstrates a clear head under breaking news and deadline situations and is flexible with changing priorities.

Web developer internships:
The Web developer internship will focus on creating enhancements to Newsday's existing family of websites. The ability to work well within a team and independently are both essential. Interns will be called upon to develop and design Web projects that vary in size and scope from quick projects with daily deadlines to long-term features. Candidates should have previous Web design or Web development experience with intermediate knowledge in at least one of the following: HTML, XML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, PHP, MySQL, Actionscript.
Prior journalism experience is a plus. Candidates with previous internships and experience are preferred. This is a unique and flexible position and will be tailored to the successful candidate's strengths. Web developer interns report to Newsday's Melville office.
