Couples wanting to unwind, de-stress or reconnect with each other can find a relaxing oasis inside a number of spas on Long Island that have created special rooms and body treatments with them in mind.
All this luxury isn't only for romantic couples, but also for girlfriends, guy friends, mothers and daughters and other duos seeking a place to relax and rejuvenate with someone special.
Here's a sampling of what's out there:
Gurney's Seawater Spa and Thalasso Center at Gurney's Inn Resort & Spa : 290 Old Montauk Hwy., Montauk, 631-668-2345, gurneysinn.com
Last year, this spa built a special couples' room that has a two-person steam shower, hydrotherapy tub and side-by-side massage tables. Its Marine Kur Couples Treatment ($460, 90 minutes) incorporates seawater, which rejuvenates, detoxifies and remineralizes the body, says Susan Yunker, the program coordinator and a registered nurse. Massage therapists first exfoliate with a seaweed toning gel, moving next to a seawater-hydromassage in a 120-jet Thalasso tub, followed by a warm seaweed body mask, steam shower and seaweed cell body lotion.
Also try: During warmer months, couples can have massages inside rooftop tents overlooking the ocean ($230-$460, 60-120 minutes).
Sandalwood Day Spa and Rejuvenation Center : 5788 Merrick Rd., Massapequa, 516-799-7991, sandalwooddayspa.com
The spa's couples' room has side-by-side massage tables, with gold-and-burgundy decor and soft artificial candlelight. Romantic couples can choose from several "spa date" packages, a mix of custom massages and body treatments ($270-$470) or opt for a one-hour massage lesson ($150). The spa also offers multi-hour Best Friends Forever and Mother-Daughter Day packages ($440-$450).
Also try: The Fabulous Feet treatment ($30 each, 30 minutes) that includes a foot massage, knee-to-toe exfoliating sugar or salt scrub, warm paraffin treatment, finishing with a hydrating foot lotion.
T. Carlton's Spalon Hair Studio & Day Spa : 725 Rte. 347 / Smithtown Bypass, Smithtown, 631-584-9393, tcarltons.com
The Spaliday for Two package ($581, about 41/2 hours) is a head-to-toe treat, says spa manager Christine Carlton, who owns the place with her hairstylist husband Tom Carlton. Two adjoining rooms transform into one large couples suite when a pocket door between them is opened. Couples on "Spaliday" receive a facial, manicure, pedicure and "Hawaiian Breeze" coconut-oil massage, followed by 20 minutes in the sauna and chocolate-covered strawberries.
Spa 190 : 190 E. Jericho Tpke., Mineola, 516-248-7190, spa190.com
The "Romantic Getaway" package ($395, 2 hours) starts in the newly added couples' room, decorated in sage and dark wood, with side-by-side massage tables, a steam shower built for two, wall-mounted fireplace and flowing water wall outside the door. Seated in comfy armchairs in the "sanctuary corner," couples receive warm neck wraps and hydrating hand massages as their feet soak. After a foot massage, they move to the tables for body massages, then a steam and finally a snack - a fruit-and-cheese plate or chocolates and their choice of wine, Champagne or a Bellini cocktail.
Also try: The Yin Yang Body Renewal treatment ($180, 60 minutes) features male- and female-specific body scrubs, followed by an allover body cream and steam shower.
Quintessentials Bed & Breakfast and Spa : 8985 Main Rd., East Marion, 631-477-9400, quintessentialsinc.com
Staff members at this 1830s sea captain's mansion-turned- North Fork B&B greet couples with herbal tea, a foot bath and herbal neck treatment, and then it's off to the couples massage suite. The Quintessentials Signature Couples Massage is "two therapists, two hours, four hands and very relaxing," says innkeeper and spa director Sylvia Daley. It includes a 30-minute lesson in couples massage, 30 minutes of practice, and a one-hour massage from the pros. The couple departs with a take-home body-and-bath package with written instructions.
Also try: The "24-Hour Getaway" includes a massage, facial, foot treatment, body scrub, body wrap and spa lunch for two featuring locally grown food, plus an overnight stay in the B&B ($499).
From April 13-19, more than two dozen Long Island salons and spas will offer $50 treatments, like a facial, nail treatment, haircut or massage. For a full list of participating spas on Long Island, go to spaweek.com .
