Irene Virag: Virag: Forgot eggplants? What was I thinking
I don't know whether time speeded up when I wasn't looking in my vegetable garden this season or I was simply too busy worrying about the roses to notice the Swiss chard, but suddenly everything was going wild. The lettuce was about to bolt, the squash was trying to strangle the tomatoes, the beans were reaching over the obelisk and the eggplant - ohmygod, the eggplant was missing, and it was all my fault.

Beth Whitehouse: PARENTAL GUIDANCE: Ways to put child's sleep issues to bed
My 2-year-old wakes up at 2a.m. daily screaming, "Mommy, I want to come down!" This has been going on for more than a month. We've tried several times letting her cry it out for up to an hour, but that hasn't worked. Out of pure exhaustion, we've resorted to bringing her into our bed. How do we get her to sleep in her crib all night?

Teen remembered in yearly swim
It's July 1999, and 17-year-old Maggie Fischer of Brightwaters is rigorously training to take part in the Great South Bay Cross Bay Swim. The strenuous 5.2-mile benefit swim starts at the Fire Island Lighthouse dock and concludes at Gilbert Park in Brightwaters, and she and a group of enthusiastic swimmers are just crazy enough to brave it.

Snapshots of Long Island abound online
Maybe it's the blogosphere's way of saying that Long Island is a place you have to see to believe. Because as Long Island-centric blogs pop up on the Internet, an increasing number are using photos to tell their stories, lifelong love affairs with the beaches, mansions and the overall landscape of LI.

Putting swimming in focus
If your child wears glasses or contacts, he may be happy to learn that prescription children's swimming goggles are available through aclens.com. You give the company your child's prescription and eye doctor's phone number, and the company makes goggles to order. They sell for $30.95 and come in black, blue or green, and usually ship within a day or so, says Peter Clarkson, chief executive of the Ohio company. The lenses are 100 percent protected for ultraviolet light, types A and B. Lenses are available to correct for nearsightedness or farsightedness.
