The New York Titans won the one that mattered most.
New York had a nemesis in the Minnesota Swarm, which they had never beaten, but New York broke through in what was the biggest game of the franchise's two-year existence, topping the Swarm, 11-8, in the NLL East Division semifinals yesterday in St. Paul.
The teams finished the regular season with identical 10-6 records - as did the other two playoff teams in their conference - but Minnesota got home turf advantage by virtue of their 2-0 record in the teams' head-to-head matchups.
Coincidentally, the Titans, who are riding a five-game win streak, were dealt their last defeat by the Swarm on April 5.
They exacted their revenge.
The score was 8-8 with under three minutes left when Casey Powell, the team's leading scorer, netted back-to-back goals.
"I got off some picks and was able to get to the center of the field," said Powell, who scored a game-high four goals.
The team's turnaround from last season - a 4-12 campaign - even surprised coach Adam Mueller, who coached Minnesota in 2006.
"I've never seen a bunch of guys be able to do it this fast," he said.
