Panel to deliver report on special districts
A state panel will deliver a report to Gov. David A.
Paterson today on how New York could trim tax bills by merging, consolidating or eliminating special purpose districts or other layers of government.
The Commission on Local Government Efficiency and Competitiveness started work a year ago, charged by then- Gov. Eliot Spitzer with finding ways to streamline the state's welter of more than 4,200 fragmented and overlapping taxing jurisdictions. The districts handle such services as water and garbage pickup.
