Sherry Palencia’s breast cancer was discovered during a routine mammogram in May 2008.
Her treatment: Full chemotherapy and radiation.
But Sherry, a ballroom dance teacher, believes that her high energy level made a huge difference.
“Because I was so healthy before, it helped me keep my strength,” she says.
Nevertheless, complications arose, including pulmonary embolisms and deep vein thrombosis. But she never lost her sense of self.
“The chemo, the baldness, the transfusions, the sickness - I was still me through it all.”
Meeting Sherry today, it’s hard to imagine that she had ever been ill. She’ll be using her high energy and passion for dance to raise money for Breast Cancer Help Inc. by participating in a fundraiser on Oct. 25, called the Tango for Breast Cancer (see www.argentinetangolovers.com for more info).
Every cancer survivor who comes to the event will receive a voucher for a free 1 1/2 hour tango lesson.
“I knew that if I could get through it, then I could give hope to others,” she says “We all have many more tangos in us!”
