A Sleepy Hollow man accused of trying to choke his wife to death during a fight at their home this past weekend was ordered back to court next Monday, officials said.

Christopher Howson, 49, has been charged with second-degree attempted murder and first-degree strangulation in the 3 a.m. incident Saturday. His attorney on Monday requested an adjournment of the case, and a Sleepy Hollow Village judge ordered Howson to return in a week.

Howson's 47-year-old wife, whose name police did not release, was listed in critical condition Monday at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center in Sleepy Hollow and is not expected to survive, police said.

Howson dialed 911 after the fight, police said, not specifying the cause of the argument. His wife was found unresponsive inside their home at 127 New Broadway. She was in cardiac arrest, and police began resuscitation efforts before she was taken to the hospital, officials said.

Howson was arraigned Saturday before Village Justice Alfred Farella, who ordered him held without bail at Westchester County Jail.

The couple have two daughters, ages 5 and 8, according to News12.

Neighbor Billy Ryan said he is shocked by the incident.

"They were always nice people, never really a problem," Ryan told News12. Howson, he said, is "a mild kind of guy, very timid ... pleasant. But I guess people are capable of anything."

There is no history of domestic incidents at the home, police said.

"It's a horrible event," Ryan said. "You really have to rally around the kids and take it one step at a time."

The investigation is ongoing, Sleepy Hollow police said, with Westchester County police detectives and the county district attorney's office assisting.
