Man dies during NYC Triathlon
A 32-year-old man from Argentina died while competing in the New York City triathlon on the West Side yesterday, becoming the first fatality in the eight-year history of the race.
Police said the victim, who was taken to St. Luke's Hospital, suffered cardiac arrest at Pier 20 and 79th Street when he was brought to shore.
Swimmers around the man noticed he wasn't moving and immediately, "called over to the rescue boat and jet ski for help," event organizer Bill Burke said.
"The athlete completed somewhere between 1,200 to 1,300 meters of the 1,500-meter swim," Burke said. "He was immediately placed on a jet-ski boat and was receiving life support
. fire rescue teams on there realized he was in bad shape. They continued to give him life support on the shore."
The medical examiner's office said it will perform an autopsy today on the victim, who was not identified, as his family in Argentina wasn't notified yet.
More than 3,000 people took part in the annual race yesterday.
