Will Greg Maddux break
Tom Seaver's all-time vote percentage total of 98.84?Seaver was named on 425 of 430 ballots in 1992. Maddux won 355 games and is the only shoo-in to be elected this year by the eligible members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
As of Monday afternoon, Maddux had been named on 100 percent of the ballots revealed publicly and tallied by Baseballthinkfactory.org. But only 133 ballots had been revealed by that time, which is 23 percent of last year's total. No player was elected last year.
Will Craig Biggio and/or
Mike Piazza make it in their second years on the ballot? Will Jack Morris make it in his 15th and final year on the BBWAA ballot? Will any other first-timers
join Maddux? What about the so-called PED guys? The writers have consistently rejected players who carry the taint of performance-enhancing drug use. So there's no reason to expect Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire or Rafael Palmeiro to get any closer than they have in the past. Clemens and Bonds, two of the greatest players in baseball history, each received less than 38 percent last year in their first year of eligibility.
