Jeter, Rivera, Teixeira named All-Stars
Three Yankees will represent the American League in the All-Star Game July 14 in St. Louis. Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira were named to the starting lineup and closer Mariano Rivera was also selected.
"It's always an honor," Jeter said. "It never gets old. Every player wants to be a part of it. If they tell you they don't, they're lying to you. There are a lot of great players out there, so it's an honor to be going there."
Jeter led the AL in votes for the first time in his career, picking up 4,851,889. "It makes you feel good when people respect the way you play even if they're not Yankees fans," he said.
Jeter and Rivera each earned his 10th All-Star selection, making them the only two players who have been named All-Stars with their current team at least 10 times, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
"It's a blessing," Rivera said. "It's a privilege to be on an All-Star team."
Rivera said he is proud to have accomplished so much with Jeter and looks forward to sharing this year's All-Star experience with Teixeira, too.
"It's special the first time as a Yankee," said Teixeira, who will be playing in his second All-Star Game. "I was hoping to get off to a good start here and, especially the way we're playing right now, it's great to have Derek, myself and Mo to be able to represent the Yankees."
Teixeira, who said he will not take part in the home run derby because of an embarrassing performance in 2005, thanked the fans who helped him edge Boston's Kevin Youkilis.
"There are four or five first basemen who deserve to go,'' he said, "but you have to give credit to the Yankees fans for getting me there."
