Bartolo Colon, Jorge Posada, Russell Martin, Chris Capuano and Manny Ramirez
After Bartolo Colon's start last night, it's more evident than ever that his tank is on E, isn't it? Gosh. What do you do with him? See if he can help out of the bullpen for the playoffs? Just thank him and wish him luck in the upcoming WWE season?
At this point, the Yankees' best choice for a Game 3 starting pitcher seems to be... Phil Hughes? If he gets healthy. Game 4, for the second round? Umm...Freddy Garcia? A.J. Burnett?
You can be sure that Joe Girardi will be resting his key bullpen guys this coming week, knowing full well that they'll be getting a great deal of work in the playoffs.
--Interesting, too, that the Yankees started Jesus Montero at catcher last night, a clear examination of using him as their backup catcher in the playoffs. The question is, do you want your backup catcher to be someone whom you actually want to use in a game for other purposes, be it DH or pinch hitter?
Martin is on the speedy side for a catcher, so he wouldn't need a pinch runner. Nevertheless, your backup catcher on a playoff roster is traditionally an "In case of emergency, break glass" guy like Francisco Cervelli or Jose Molina the last few years. And in 2009, when the Yankees used Molina to catch A.J. Burnett, they had Cervelli on their roster, too, just so Jorge Posada could pinch hit and the Yankees wouldn't be caught empty-handed.
As for Posada, whom we discussed yesterday, Girardi indicated that he'll make the postseason roster. So that's that.
--CC Sabathia won't start again until the postseason. I didn't have a chance to address this yesterday, but yes, I did think it was silly that Girardi left Sabathia in Wednesday night's game for so long. The manager obviously was trying to get Sabathia his 20th win, but that shouldn't have been so important to have Sabathia throw 127 pitches.
--Martin says he hates the Red Sox. I look forward to seeing if David Ortiz has a reaction to that.
--Here's a story I wrote on the AL MVP race.
--Manny Banuelos, Adam Warren and David Phelps will join the Yankees today, but just to hang out and soak in the atmosphere.
--Great story by David Lennon, who reports that the Red Sox nearly traded for Chris Capuano so he could start Sunday against the Yankees. I look forward to seeing the Red Sox tonight in person at the Stadium.
--Which reminds me, here are five things to watch in this weekend's Red Sox-Yankees series.
--Three simple words: 1) Manny; 2) Ramirez; 3) comeback. Are you surprised? I am, a little. If he's serious, what Manny would have to do is find a team next year willing to pay him to sit out 100 games and then count on him for an August-September surge.
Would a team do that? Maybe for a few hundred thousand bucks. Maybe only for a minor-league contract.
--I'll check in tonight from Yankee Stadium.
