Contest: The Crowd Sounds Happy
"The Crowd Sounds Happy," by Nicholas Dawidoff (no relation), is subtitled "A Story of Love, Madness and Baseball," and I suspect the "Baseball" part is why I received a free copy of it.
Baseball really is secondary in this memoir, as Dawidoff's love of the Red Sox (mostly during the 1970s and '80s) serves as a safe harbor from a very challenging childhood. Dawidoff's father left his family when Dawidoff was a child, and his father - with whom Dawidoff kept in touch - gradually descended into madness. Not fun.
This book is challenging, too. I wouldn't classify it as an easy read. But you certainly appreciate Dawidoff's willingness to open up and share his anguish.
And now I'll give my copy of the book to the first person who e-mails me - at firstname.lastname@example.org - with the correct answer to this question:
Who is the Red Sox's all time leader in strikeouts by a hitter?
Here are the rules to the contest.
--UPDATE, 1:45 p.m.: Les Engels, aka Phightens on Twitter, knew that Dwight Evans is the Red Sox's all-time strikeout leader (for a hitter) with 1,643. You can find the information here if you scroll down.
Look for another giveaway on Wednesday.
