Ken Davidoff's baseball insider

Yankees, Mets, trade rumors, free agents, off-the-wall predictions and other MLB musings.

Tony La Russa, Scott Boras, Phil Hughes and Kevin Mulvey

Greetings from Port St. Lucie. I'll be here for a few days serving as Newsday's Mets beat writer. So the blog might be a little Mets-centric. Then again, it might not.

--For my Sunday Insider, I wrote about Tony La Russa, Scott Boras, Jim Leyland and Joe Maddon, and as a token of corporate solidarity, I offered my picks for best and worst Yankees and Mets moves of all time - to correlate with MSG's 'The Lineup" show.

--Joe Girardi is taking a long road trip today, rather than staying home for a split-squad contest, to watch Phil Hughes pitch. Good idea. See how Hughes responds to that sort of attention.

--R.A. Dickey got lit up by the Nationals, but I'm more interested in the note that the Mets have brought back Kevin Mulvey, one of the four players they gave to Minnesota for Johan Santana. The conventional wisdom at the tiem was that the Twins didn't get enough for Santana, and for once, the CW is looking pretty, pretty, pretty good. The only player who can save the Twins is the only one left in their organization - Deolis Guerra, who's now almost 23 and put up a 5.59 ERA for Double-A New Britain last year.

Yes, Minnesota would've been far better off holding onto Santana for the 2008 season and then taking the compensatory draft picks following his departure via free agency.

--Have a great day.
