Yankees-Tigers Game 2 in review
Of course, A-Rod wasn't the only Yankees hitter who struggled against Max Scherzer yesterday. But he was the only one whom the Stadium crowd booed.
And so have ourselves a series. Game 3 tonight in Detroit, with CC Sabathia and Justin Verlander each making his second start in three games. Sounds like fun to me, all the more so since the Yankees had swept their last two Division Series over Minnesota. In fact, yesterday marked Joe Girardi's initial first-round loss as Yankees manager.
I started out saying "Yankees in 4," and of course at that time, I figured A.J. Burnett wouldn't be pitching in the series. But what the heck, I'll stick with that. These Tigers are a pretty good team, as they displayed yesterday, yet I still give the Yankees an edge in talent.
I agree with Anthony Rieber that Joe Girardi had a rough game. The only way pinch-hitting Eric Chavez for Brett Gardner would've made sense was iif Chavez had some terrifc numbers against Joaquin Benoit. That wasn't the case.
And while I'm all for reliever preservation, that's more of a regular-season thing than a postseason thing. Going to Luis Ayala in the ninth, knowing that Tigers closer Jose Valverde can be combustible? Not real good.
Meanwhile, I thought Girardi's counterpart Jim Leyland had a good day. He started the fading Magglio Ordonez because Ordonez has good career numbers (16-for-50, six doubles and a homer) against Yankees starting pitcher Freddy Garcia, and Ordonez went 3-for-3.
--Refreshingly, Yankees-Tigers is one of three series tied at a game apiece. The Rangers-Rays will hold its Game 3 today, before the Yankees and Tigers get going, and the Cardinals defeated the Phillies last night. climbing out of a 3-0 hole against Cliff Lee.
The one series on the verge of a conclusion? Brewers-Diamondbacks, with Milwaukee jumping out to a 2-0 lead yesterday.
--Good story from Philly, by David Lennon, about impending free agent Jimmy Rollins.
