Ken Davidoff's baseball insider

Yankees, Mets, trade rumors, free agents, off-the-wall predictions and other MLB musings.

So long, and thank you

Let's wrap things up Spadafore style:

News: I'm leaving Newsday for another opportunity. This will be my last post on this blog.

Views: Well, gosh. Maybe we'll make this just a one-item entry.

I gave notice on Wednesday, March 14, and I've spent much of the time since then tying up loose ends and preparing for my new job, baseball columnist for The New York Post. And when I've...

Johan Santana, Zack Wheeler, Phil Hughes and Chris Carpenter

Johan Santana's fourth Grapefruit League start went well, and at this point, it's certainly fair to suspend your suspension of disbelief (does that make sense?), at least a little, and wonder whether Santana can actually be a productive member of this Mets starting rotation.

Santana himself has seemed the most skeptical person of all. That isn't a bad thing; he won't let the Mets push him...

For the first day of the rest of their lives as Mets owners, the Wilpons and Saul Katz let Sandy Alderson do the talking for them, which is never a terrible idea. Alderson predictably defended his bosses and said that Monday's settlement with Irving Picard wouldn't dramatically change his spending plan.

Well, you know, of course it won't. The Mets still have bills to pay and debts to settle,...

Mets ownership, Andy Pettitte, Robinson Cano and Chase Utley

Huge day for the Mets ownership, as the Wilpons and Saul Katz settled their legal differences with Madoff trustee Irving Picard.

You could argue that the Wilpons got lucky, that they wouldn't have fared well in a jury trial and that some of Picard's witnesses would've been particularly compelling. But it's moot now. Just as Ryan Braun prevailed in his rather different legal battle, no...

Mike Pelfrey, Manny Banuelos, Dellin Betances and Bryce Harper

The plan is to keep it pretty basic here this week, as I have a great amount of work to do before my departure...for Italy. On Saturday. Long-planned family trip.

--Mike Pelfrey pitched terribly for the Mets on Sunday, and his existence with the Mets is starting to smell like A.J. Burnett's life with the Yankees - minus the exorbitant salary. You get the feeling that Pelfrey is simply never...

Andy Pettitte, Don Mattingly, Jon Niese and the big Madoff case

Gosh, from the way we're covering Andy Pettitte's return, you'd think it was a big deal or something.

--Mariano Rivera helped convince Pettitte to come back, Mark Herrmann writes. Herrmann also writes about Pettitte's impact on the starting rotation, and I think Joe Girardi's quote nails it: Just pitch well and don't worry about it.

It just doesn't make sense to sweat a great deal, for...

Andy Pettitte, Johan Santana and Ryan Braun

The news of the day, of course, was Andy Pettitte's return to the Yankees. I won't even pretend that I saw this one coming. Simply shocking.

Here's my column about it.

--You know it's a busy day in the Yankees' world when Derek Jeter gets shut down for a few days and it's a sidebar.

--In Port St. Lucie, Johan Santana threw his third Grapefruit League start, and the Mets sound...

Contest: "Coach"

This might be the last contest we do here...of this week.

I stumbled upon "Coach," the late '80s-early '90s sitcom starring Craig T. Nelson as the football coach of fictional Minnesota State, in the process of researching a "Pop Quiz" question. I saw only bits and pieces when it was on back in the day.

I found it to be an enjoyable show, but not a hysterically...

The Mets saw Jose Reyes for the first time since Reyes joined the Marlins. The unbalanced schedule makes it particularly interesting when a player changes teams within his division, and I wonder if Reyes' frequent visits to Citi Field in a Marlins uniform will ever feel normal for Mets fans.

Johnny Damon came to Fenway Park for nine games a year with the Yankees from 2006 through 2009, right...

A bit of a hectic week in the real world - filling in as the Mets beat writer and then taking care of some stuff upon my return to New York - meant that the blog didn't receive its standard attention. I already have apologized to the judges for the paucity of dialogue here.

But rules are rules, and we've got medals to distribute:

--The bronze goes to Sandy, who reacted to Donald...
