Mets camp, Adam Wainwright, Chris Carpenter and Danilo Gallinari

It's warm enough today that, had I brought a pair of dress shorts down to Florida with me, I would've worn 'em.

A relatively peaceful day in Mets camp. The team will play an intra-squad game tomorrow, although very few of the big names will take part - as you can see here in David Lennon's blog post - and then their Grapefruit League schedule begins Saturday with a home game against Atlanta.

Oliver Perez threw live batting practice, and \Lennon noticed that Ollie's mechanics looked a little weird. He seemed to be short-arming the ball. In any case, Perez will pitch in Sunday's game at the Braves, so that will be the Mets' first real view of Ollie's Last Chance. R.A. Dickey looked better in his session.

Terry Collins continues to speak of second base as an "offensive position," and today, he talked up Daniel Murphy. Said the skipper: "Murph keeps getting better." Should be a fun derby for that starting job.

I had a nice chat with Collins for a column I'm writing for tomorrow. As always, please don't tip off the competition.

--Adam Wainwright, as suspected, needs Tommy John surgery and will miss the entire season. The Cardinals are saying they'll find Wainwright's replacement internally, but that's obviously subject to change.

On a related note, Chris Carpenter told Ken Rosenthal that he wouldn't block a trade from St. Louis, even though he had the right to do so. At the moment, it's a moot point, as the Cardinals are trying to contend. Should St. Louis fatler, however, we'll see if Carpenter is still so willing to give up his rights.

I found Rosenthal's story on Twitter.

--I forgot to link to this story by Jim Baumbach from a couple of days ago: The always intrepid Baumbach learned that when Danilo Gallinari went from the Knicks to Denver in the trade for Carmelo Anthony, Gallinari reached out to his familiy friend - Omar Minaya.

--Interesting job possibility at Major League Baseball here.

--You can now pre-order the Amazin' Avenue Annual, a Mets season preview by the folks over at Amazin' Avenue. I received a sneak peek and have enjoyed what I've read so far. That I wrote the forward might be a selling point or a deterrent, depending on your point of view.

--Have a great night.
