The Mets signed free agent catcher Michael Barrett to a minor league contract. Barrett is well known as Carlos Zambrano’s opponent in a dugout and clubhouse brawl in June, 2007. Zambrano, the fiery Cubs pitcher who is now on suspension for his dugout rant last weekend, sent Barrett, his battery mate, to the hospital with a cut lip in the altercation.

Zambrano went after Barrett because the catcher was charged with a passed ball and made an error trying to throw a runner out at third. In 2006, Barrett tangled with A.J. Pierzynski of the White Sox.

Barrett was Rod Barajas’ teammate in Toronto in 2009. The 33-year-old is a lifetime .263 hitter. His best year came in 2006 when he hit .307 with 16 home runs.

Barrett is injury insurance for Barajas and aging Henry Blanco.
