The news from camp today includes:

Francisco Rodriguez made his spring training debut and retired three Cardinals in a row on seven pitches. I interpreted that as: let's start the season already!

The two leading candidates for the fifth starter job (Fernando Nieve and Jon Niese) pitched and... well... have we told you how good Hisanori Takahashi has looked?

You get the picture.

Neither Nieve or Niese - and I love that their last names have only a one-letter difference - did anything to stand out today. So the fifth starter competition remains just that. An open competition. And every time neither of those guys does anything, it just makes Takahashi's strong camp thus far look that much more impressive.

Finally, Angel Pagan hit a two-run walkoff home run to give the Mets a 6-5 win. Carlos who?
