FINAL SCORE: Diamondbacks 14, Mets 1

WP: Daniel Hudson (2-1)

LP: Jonathan Niese (7-5)

Bottom 9th: Esmerling Vasquez relieved Hudson. Hudson turned over a stellar start to Vasquez. Feliciano and Pagan made two quick outs, but Beltran hit a pinch-hit single past the diving first baseman and Davis singled to right to keep the inning alive. Hessman left them stranded and ended the game by flailing at a curveball and striking out.

Score: Mets 1, Diamondbacks 14

Top 9th: Perez was practically throwing batting practice this inning. Drew walked and then Hester singled and advanced to third on a throw to third. Drew and Hester came home thanks to back-to-back singles by pinch-hitter Augie Ojeda and Young. Ojeda scored from third on a sac fly from Bobby Crosby. Parra struck out looking and LaRoche flied out to end the inning.

Score: Mets 1, Diamondbacks 14

Bottom 8th: Alex Cora hit a one-out double to end the hitless streak. Hudson retired 21 of 22 batters until Cora's double. The double was to no avail, however, as Carter flied out to left and Castillo grounded out to second to end the inning.

Score: Mets 1, Diamondbacks 11

Top 8th: Oliver Perez relieved Elmer Dessens. Perez was booed heavily when he exited the bullpen and trotted to the mound in between innings and his performance did not help him. He let up a single to Parra, who ended up scoring on a two-out single by Reynolds. Perez struck out Ryal to end the inning.

Score: Mets 1, Diamondbacks 8

Top 5th: When it rains, it pours. Niese let up his second three-run homer to LaRoche today, then walked Reynolds and was lifted for Elmer Dessens. Wright's throwing error ruined a sure double play. Drew fouled out and Dessens walked Hester to load the bases for the pitcher Hudson. Hudson came into the game without a major league at-bat, and with the bases loaded, he sent a hard grounder up the middle and drove in the first two RBIs of his career. Young struck out looking to end the inning.

Score: Mets 1, Diamondbacks 8

Bottom 4th: Angel Pagan continues to be an outstanding producer this season. He led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on Wright's sac fly. Pagan then scored on Davis sac fly to center to bring the game within two. Francoeur grounded to third to end the inning.

Score: Mets 1, Diamondbacks 3

Top 3rd: Niese was cruising through the D'Backs lineup, but he surrendered five consecutive hits this inning, including a three-run homer to LaRoche. Johnson and Upton singled with one out. Upton extended his hit streak to 17 games. Then LaRoche his a laser into right field, his 15th dinger of the year. Drew flied out, Hester walked and Hudson grounded to the pitcher to end the inning.

Score: Mets 0, Diamondbacks 3

Bottom 3rd: Niese struck out, Reyes grounded out and Feliciano flied out.

Score: Mets 0, Diamondbacks 0

Top 3rd: Hudson is making his NL debut today after being traded from the White Sox for Edwin Jackson on Friday. He also had the first at-bat of his career after Drew and Hester made outs. Hudson let the first strike go back and whiffed on the second. He chopped the third pitch to first for the final out. Nice as embarrassing as it could have been for sure. His pitching has been  more impressive, with a deceptively slow motion, he's reached 94 mph today.

Score: Mets 0, Diamondbacks 0

Bottom 2nd: Francoeur grounded out, Thole and Cora popped out.

Score: Mets 0, Diamondbacks 0

Top 2nd: LaRoche and Reynolds grounded out for the first two outs. Niese struck out Ryal on a tight curveball in the dirt, but the pitch bounced away from Thole and Ryal was safe at first. Thole made up for the mistake, however, nabbing Ryal at second on an attempted steal to end the inning.

Score: Mets 0, Diamondbacks 0

Bottom 1st: Feliciano and Pagan carried their hot hitting into today's game, each roping singles in the first inning. The problem is that neither Wright nor Davis could bring them home. Wright struck out and Davis flied out to right-center for the final out.

Score: Mets 0, Diamondbacks 0

Top 1st: Niese threw nine quality starts in 10 chances in June and July and he's starting off August on the right foot: a 1-2-3 inning.  Young flied out to right, Johnson struck out swinging at a heater and Upton flied out to center.

Score: Mets 0, Diamondbacks 0

Leading off: Happy August 1st everyone! With just two months and change left in the season, the Mets are 6.5 games back, with crucial upcoming series against the Braves and Phillies next week. Today's outing by Jonathan Niese will determine who Manuel starts against the Phillies in the weekend series. If Niese pitches well, the rotation will be Niese, Santana and Dickey, with Takahashi pitching out of the bullpen for lefty matchups ... Bay is still suffering headaches and there is no timetable for his return ... Beltran raised his hands in his batting stance to cut down on pop ups ... Feliciano is starting in place of Beltran, a reward for leading off the ninth inning last night with a triple and scoring the winning run ... Daniel Hudson, starting for the D'Backs, is making his NL debut after getting traded Friday by the White Sox for pitcher Edwin Jackson.
