March 31 vs. Washington; L, 9-7
10 innings
It didn’t take long into 2014 for the Mets to get to extra innings. On Opening Day against the Nationals, the bullpen struggled. Closer Bobby Parnell blew the save by giving up a two-out game-tying double to Denard Span in the ninth inning. Ian Desmond put the Nationals ahead, 6-5, with a sacrifice fly in the 10th before Anthony Rendon hit a three-run home run off John Lannan to give the Nats a few insurance runs. The Mets rallied for two runs in the bottom half of the 10th, but it wasn’t enough.(Credit: Newsday / Thomas A. Ferrara)
