It didn’t take long into 2014 for the Mets to get to extra innings. On Opening Day against the Nationals, the bullpen struggled. Closer Bobby Parnell blew the save by giving up a two-out game-tying double to Denard Span in the ninth inning. Ian Desmond put the Nationals ahead, 6-5, with a sacrifice fly in the 10th before Anthony Rendon hit a three-run home run off John Lannan to give the Nats a few insurance runs. The Mets rallied for two runs in the bottom half of the 10th, but it wasn’t enough. (Credit: Newsday / Thomas A. Ferrara)
