Mr. Met joins LIRR's 'Watch the Gap' campaign
Starting Monday, Mr. Met becomes the newest face of the Long Island Rail Road's "Watch the Gap" campaign -- reminding customers to pay attention to dangerous gaps between platforms and trains while riding the railroad.
The public service campaign will feature the Mets mascot in fliers and on a scoreboard announcement starting with the team's home stand Monday.
The Flushing-Shea Stadium station was one of the first platforms fixed as part of the railroad's efforts to fix the dangerous platform gaps.
It was in August of last year when a Minnesota teen fell through a platform gap at the Woodside station in Queens and was killed by a train as she attempted to climb off of the tracks.
Railroad officials said they enlisted the help of the Mets because about 10 percent of all fans take the train to games at Shea Stadium. During the playoffs, officials said, those numbers rise to about 20 percent.
The announcement featured in the campaign states: "Mets fans, here's a safety message from Mr. Met. When you take the train to the game, remember to watch the gap between the train and platform. Thank you."
