Recent baseball concussions
2009EDGAR GONZALEZ, SAN DIEGO. On July 18, Colorado's Jason Hammel hit Gonzalez in the head with a pitch. Gonzalez reportedly suffered vertigo and hearing loss and hasn't played since.
SCOTT ROLEN, CINCINNATI. Colorado's Jason Marquis hit Rolen in the head with a pitch. He played in games Aug. 5 and Aug. 7 before going on the disabled list.
DAVID WRIGHT, METS. The Mets placed him on the DL yesterday after San Francisco's Matt Cain beaned him Saturday.
2008
RYAN CHURCH, METS. Surely you remember his tale of not one but two concussions (in an 11-week period), and how badly the Mets dealt with the situation. He has played better since getting traded to the Braves.
AARON HILL, TORONTO. During a May 29 game, second baseman Hill collided with shortstop David Eckstein while chasing after a pop fly. He missed the rest of the season but has rebounded with an All-Star campaign.
HUMBERTO QUINTERO, HOUSTON: On July 1, the Astros catcher was hit in the head on a backswing by the Dodgers' Luis Maza. He went on the disabled list and returned to action July 22.
REGGIE WILLITS, ANGELS. Willits, amazingly, suffered two concussions in less than a week. On Aug. 3, teammate Gary Matthews Jr. kneed him in the head as they pursued a fly ball. On Aug. 8, he collided with Yankees pitcher Brian Bruney while scoring from third base. He went on the DL and returned Aug. 27.
2007JEFF BAKER, COLORADO. On Aug. 10, Marquis, then with the Cubs, hit Baker in the face and batting helmet. He went on the DL and returned Sept. 3.
DAVE ROSS, CINCINNATI. The catcher suffered his injury in an Aug. 12 collision with San Diego's Mike Cameron. He went on the DL and returned Aug. 28.
