HOUSTON - The Mets hope Jose Reyes can return to the big leagues in "10 to 14 days," manager Jerry Manuel said Saturday.

"Optimistically," Manuel added.

Reyes, out since May 26 with a right calf problem that led to a torn hamstring, hasn't engaged in all-out running during his rehab in Port St. Lucie, Fla. But optimism has been growing all week as the shortstop has shown improvement.

"Every day, he's doing more," Manuel said. "He has had not one setback. He's been running pretty good. The progression that he's making sounds very favorable to him being back."

Maine to doc

John Maine (shoulder) will travel to Birmingham, Ala., on Wednesday to meet with Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion.

Maine has been limited to playing catch since feeling "discomfort" in the shoulder after a 65-pitch simulated game.

Boone hopes to return

Former Yankee Aaron Boone, who had open-heart surgery in March, has been working out with the Astros this weekend in hopes of resuming his career before the season ends.

"I'm just looking forward to working out [Friday] and working out [Saturday], and trying my best to get my body ready to be back with the team down the stretch,'' Boone told MLB.com. "I feel like I'm in pretty good shape and my strength has come back pretty good."

Boone, 36, signed with the Astros in the offseason.

Extra bases

With Gary Sheffield going on the DL with a strained right hamstring, the Mets have 10 players on the DL . . . Daniel Murphy batted cleanup for the first time and had an RBI double in the Mets' three-run first inning. He later had a second double . . . Alex Cora (thumb) returned to the lineup.
