Today is the first Mets Insider of the new season - a regular feature that runs every Friday - and in it we take a look at the mind games of Mike Pelfrey, who is one of many players that use sports psychologist Harvey Dorfman.

Pelfrey has worked with Dorfman since his college days at Wichita State, and usually speaks with on the phone between starts. He also visited with him in North Carolina this offseason for a more intense two-day session. Pelfrey is a physically gifted pitcher, but the mental side is something that he's still working on, which is where Dorfman comes in.

I also spoke to Al Leiter, who credits Dorfman with essentially saving his career after two operations on his arm and shoulder. Leiter is a big proponent of Dorfman, and sheds some more light on how he can help a pitcher focus more while on the mound.
