Joe Girardi said he would go on his computer shortly after
last night's game against the Indians to see how recently demoted Ian Kennedy fared in his first start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
"I'm anxious to see how he does," Girardi said.
The Yankees manager had a good report awaiting him.
Kennedy gave up only one hit in 7 1/3 scoreless innings in Scranton's 4-0 win over Charlotte. The only other baserunner Kennedy allowed was hit by a pitch.
Kennedy was 0-2 with an 8.37 ERA in six games and 23 2/3 innings for the Yankees before being sent down Sunday. He had 20 walks and 16 strikeouts. Last night for Scranton, he had no walks and struck out eight.
Kei Igawa will start in Kennedy's spot against the Tigers on Friday. Girardi said Kennedy could make as few as two starts in the minors before being recalled. That, however, will depend on how Kennedy pitches in the minors and how rotation additions Igawa and Darrell Rasner fare in the big leagues.
"There's no exact science to the plan," Girardi said before Kennedy's start. "You just want to see him get right. That's the most important thing."
