Even though he waited until the 51st season to pitch the Mets’ first no-hitter, he earned spot by leading the league in ERA and innings pitched in 2008, culminating with critical a three-hit shutout on three days’ rest on the next-to-last day of the season despite a damaged knee.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Earlier on Friday evening, word began to trickle that the Mets' Johan Santana was leaning toward attempting a second major shoulder surgery to continue his pitching career.

Via Twitter on Friday night, Santana's agent Chris Lieble shared the pitcher's plan: "With regard to @johansantana, he is taking time this weekend w/his family contemplating whether or not to have surgery. @johansantana 's plan is to be back on the mound pitching again as soon as possible."

Santana isn't expected to make any public statements until after the weekend. We'll have more on Santana in a bit.
