Kelly Shoppach excited Mets showed interest in him
CINCINNATI — Kelly Shoppach exhaled a bit, drawing a few laughs as he carefully measured his words.
Shoppach, acquired by the Mets on Tuesday for a player to be named, was asked about the soap opera he left behind in Boston.
“There is a disconnect in communication between the players through the upper management,” the veteran catcher said Wednesday.
But that’s no longer Shoppach’s problem. He’s with an organization he said he had brief contact with in the offseason as both sides gauged interest. The Mets will platoon Shoppach with Josh Thole, and are viewing this as a potential tryout for 2013.
Shoppach, who’ll be a free agent after the season, wouldn’t go that far, though.
“No. I mean, sure,” he said. “I’m really excited that another team has interest in me. That makes me feel great as a player. But I want to win ballgames. It’s no fun to have any type of individual success if you don’t get to share it with your teammates. And if you don’t win ballgames, you don’t have that opportunity.”
