Reports: Eric Chavez to Diamondbacks, Jeff Keppinger to White Sox

Should Eric Chavez have pinch-hit for Alex Rodriguez

Should Eric Chavez have pinch-hit for Alex Rodriguez in the bottom of the 13th?

Pro: A-Rod was 1-for-4, but with two strikeouts and has looked bad in this series. He was pinch-hit for on Wednesday with Raul Ibanez and Ibanez hit the tying home run.
Con: A day after being pinch-hit for, the Yankees pinch-hit for A-Rod again, a move that must seriously damage is psyche. Plus Chavez has not been the power threat Ibanez has been this season.

Result: Chavez lined out to third base to end the game.

The infield options are disappearing quickly for the Yankees.

Just hours after Marco Scutaro agreed to a three-year deal to remain in San Francisco, Jeff Keppinger hooked on with the White Sox for three years and Eric Chavez agreed on a one-year contract with the Diamondbacks, according to multiple reports. Jon Heyman first reported both deals.

With Alex Rodriguez likely out until mid-season or longer, it was thought that the Yankees primary goal was a platoon of Chavez, who played with the team each of the last two years, and Keppinger, who was a member of the Rays last season. Chavez would have batted against right-handers, and Keppinger -- a lefty masher throughout his career -- would have started against southpaws.

Kevin Youkilis and Mark Reynolds are still free agents, though both have reportedly drawn several suitors and Youkilis, the ex-Red Sox, isn't expected to come cheap, particularly on a one-year deal. Reynolds was non-tendered by the Orioles and is not good defensively.

The Yankees are trying to avoid multi-year deals in order to meet an ownership mandate to reduce payroll below $189 million luxury tax threshold for the 2014 season.
