SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – David Wright, taking part in his second World Baseball Classic, thinks it’s crazy to blame the tournament for what happened to the Yankees' Mark Teixeira, who bowed out with a strained wrist tendon.

“I think he did it swinging off a tee or something,” Wright said. “They got tees in Tampa. You can get hurt here, you can get hurt in St. Lucie, in Tampa. It doesn’t matter. As we see every year, every spring training, guys unfortunately get hurt. It’s just kind of the nature of the beast.”

Wright also wanted to dispel the notion that players are more likely to get injured here because they’re out of their normal spring-training regimens.

“This isn’t a vacation,” Wright said. “It’s not like we’re rolling out of bed coming out here and playing games. We’re preparing the same way that we would prepare if we were in St. Lucie or in Mark’s case, in Tampa.

“We have a strength coach that loosens us up, we go through our regular routines. We have all the tools and we’re doing everything we would do for a normal routine in spring training. Freak accidents happen. It’s just part of it.”
