The Mets revived their Banner Day tradition last year to help celebrate the 50th anniversary, and this year, they're adding a familiar face to the celebration.
Former Mets infielder Edgardo Alfonzo will be a judge for Banner Day before the Mets' game against the Pirates on May 11 at Citi Field. He joins SNY's Kevin Brukhardt and 92.3 Now's Ty Bentli on the panel.

Toronto Blue Jays slugger Edwin Encarnacion had hit 47 home runs at the Rogers Centre before Tuesday, but he never hit any quite like this one.
With the Jays leading the Boston Red Sox 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Encarnacion hit an absolute moonshot off of Jon Lester that landed in the fifth deck in left field. He's only the 14th player ever to hit one into the 500 level at Rogers...Read more »
Jonathon Niese left Tuesday's game against the Dodgers in the third inning after getting struck by a line drive in the right leg off the bat of A.J. Ellis.

Believe it or not, 40-year-old Manny Ramirez is still being Manny -- just in Taiwan.
Ramirez, the new star of the EDA Rhinos, came up with a man on and no one out in a 2-2 game in the top of the 11th inning against the Brother Elephants. The former big-leaguer belted a home run to left field to go up 4-2. The announcers went crazy, and Manny, being his old quirky self, took for-ever to round...Read more »

Let the closer carousels begin.
Greg Holland is still the Royals’ closer — for now. But so far he only has two saves while Kelvin Herrera and Aaron Crow have combined for three. Holland did record the save in his last outing on April 9, but it was far from easy. It took 27 pitches, and he allowed a hit and two walks before closing out the game.
Herrera, on the other hand, has been lights...Read more »

The Yankees have acquired pitcher Sam Demel off waivers from the Houston Astros, the team announced Wednesday.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees have designated fellow righthanded pitcher Danny Otero for assignment.
Demel made only one appearance at the big-league level last year as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks. In one relief inning of work, the 27-year-old righthander...Read more »
The Yankees are on the verge of acquiring outfielder Vernon Wells from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Newsday's Anthony Rieber has confirmed.
Wells, 34, is owed $42 million over the next two years. He also has a no-trade clause in his contract, so he would have to accept any move.
Last season with the Angels, he his .230 with 11 home runs and 29 RBIs in 77 games. In his 14-year career,...Read more »
